- Regional President: Maxton Hall is a great opportunity for tourism
Despite the closure of most indoor spaces, visitors can still experience the Marienburg Castle near Hildesheim. This neo-Gothic structure south of Hannover has gained international attention as a filming location for a popular teen series.
"We're delighted that the series 'Maxton Hall' has sparked so much enthusiasm and brought the Marienburg Castle to the fore in our region of Hannover," said Regional President Steffen Krach (SPD) to dpa. "This is also a great opportunity for tourism in the region."
As the responsible building authority, the region closed most indoor spaces of the cultural monument in September 2023 due to wood-destroying fungi infecting the roof beams.
"Especially because fans can't currently visit the historic rooms for safety reasons, it's our aim, together with the city of Pattensen and the foundation, to develop concepts that allow an experience during the renovation phase and provide interesting information about the castle and its facilities," Krach emphasized. The catering facilities are now open on weekends again.
The dilapidated cultural monument needs comprehensive renovation, with work expected to continue until 2030. Ernst August Prince of Hannover (41) transferred the Marienburg to a foundation after a dispute with his namesake father, Ernst August Prince of Hannover (70).
Before its closure, up to 120,000 visitors per year visited the castle, according to Hannover Marketing & Tourism GmbH.
Despite the castle's closure for indoor visits, many tourists continue to explore the Marienburg Castle in Hildesheim, as it served as a filming location for a popular teen series. Due to the renovation work caused by wood-destroying fungi, the region and city of Pattensen are collaborating to offer alternative experiences for visitors at the Hildesheim cultural monument.
