Shipbuilding - Refurbishment of the "Gorch Fock 1" - outer shell complete again
The shipbuilders involved have taken an important step forward in the complete renovation of the former training sailing ship"Gorch Fock 1". The outer skin of the more than 80-meter-long traditional sailing ship has recently been completed again. Towards the end of last week, workers replaced a panel in the middle of the ship that had been removed to remove engine parts.
According to the city, which has owned the 90-year-old three-masted barque since this year, a total of around 70 square meters of outer skin had to be replaced. The ship has been at the Volkswerft shipyard in Stralsund since June. At a cost of around ten million euros, the aim is to ensure the ship's buoyancy for the next 25 years, the safety of the rigging and fire protection.
Most of the money comes from EU and state funding. The Tall-Ship Friends e.V. association is responsible for its own contribution. It owned the ship before the city. The association will continue to operate the "Gorch Fock 1" as a museum ship in Stralsund's city harbor. According to the city, it will be open to visitors again for the season next year.
The ship is currently largely scaffolded in the large shipbuilding hall at the Stralsund shipyard. Around 50 employees of the Stralsund subsidiary of the Norwegian company Fosen Yard are working on the ship, according to the city. In addition to the outer shell including bulkheads, decks and the rigging on the bottom are currently being renewed. The masts have already been removed, cleaned, sanded, welded and repainted. They still need to be fitted and the ship's outer skin and rudder need to be preserved. In addition to other work, tests are still to be carried out before the ship is transported back.
The ship will not be ready to sail after the work, as the operating association is aiming for. According to the association, further investment is required for this.
According to the association, the "Gorch Fock 1" was built in 1933 in Hamburg by Blohm+Voss in just 100 days and sailed under the German, Soviet and Ukrainian flags. Tall-Ship Friends bought the ship from the Ukrainian Ministry of Education in 2003 and brought it to Stralsund, at that time under the name "Towarischtsch" (comrade). The ship was subsequently rechristened "Gorch Fock". This goes back to the writer of the same name.
The ship founded a ship class that comprised a total of six ships, including the youngest sister ship built in 1958 and current sail training ship of the German Navy, which also bears the name "Gorch Fock".
