At the swimming pools in Frankfurt, refugees have been hard at work this summer. In an innovative hiring process, they reached out to the German Red Cross (DRK) and spoke with potential candidates and current staff members residing in a refugee shelter. As per Boris Zielinski, the manager of the leisure centers, eleven individuals were successfully persuaded.
Currently, eight out of the eleven have already been employed in various roles such as cleaners, cashiers, and lifeguards. Meanwhile, three more individuals are still waiting for the necessary permit. Two men from Eritrea, who are now working as cleaners, shared their experiences at a press conference at the Brentanobad swimming pool. They expressed their satisfaction with their new positions.
Frankfurt's mayor, Mike Josef (SPD), expressed pride in this leading initiative. He emphasized the integral role it plays in fostering opportunities for refugees and gaining talented workers. Josef described this project as a triumph and a prospect for development on both sides. However, he highlighted the significance of providing an enabling environment and readiness in order to achieve successful integration.
A total of 55 workers commenced their tasks at the leisure parks this year. In addition to this, other individuals with migratory backgrounds also joined the team. A couple of young men from Iran found employment as lifeguards at the Silobad. A young man from Afghanistan operates the cash register in a swimming pool. A woman from Kosovo is employed to clean the locker rooms. Although she is a nurse, her language skills need to be improved before she can practice in her true vocation, as she mentioned while being 24 years old.
