Refueling on highways: ADAC advises to drive off

Drivers can save around 20 euros per tank of fuel if they fill up at a normal road service station instead of a highway service station. This is the result of a comparison by the ADAC.

Prices - Refueling on highways: ADAC advises to drive off

Motorists filling up at highway rest stops often pay significantly more, according to ADAC's findings from a sample comparison of fuel prices at 40 rest stops nationwide with those at the nearest exit-located gas stations.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, for instance, the ADAC discovered a price difference of approximately 49 cents per liter for diesel and 48 cents for E10 fuel compared to the next gas station in Wittlich at the A1. An example from Saarland: At the Homburg-Saar South rest area on the A6, there is a price difference of roughly 38 cents per liter for diesel and 51 cents for E10 fuel compared to the next gas station in Waldmohr. On average, differences of nearly 20 euros for gasoline and almost 19 euros for diesel per 50-liter tank filling can be possible nationwide, the ADAC announced on Thursday. These figures were obtained from the Market Transparency Office for Fuels in April and May. At that time, the average savings for E10 were around 39 cents per liter by driving off the highway. For diesel, it was 38 cents on average. At the peak, the Traffic Club found a difference of 50 cents for diesel and 54 cents for E10. The maximum was slightly lower than the previous year, according to the ADAC.

"The price differences discovered in the sample are in no way understandable or justifiable. Therefore, we recommend leaving the highway for refueling or tanking at a cheaper station before the journey. Motorists can not only save a lot of money but also increase competition pressure on expensive gas stations," said ADAC spokesperson Mirco Hillmann. In addition to free fuel price apps that display cheap gas stations, the ADAC recommends tanking between 6 and 10 p.m. to save up to 10 cents per liter.

  1. Motorists traveling through the Eifel region might find it beneficial to refuel at a petrol station outside of the highway, considering the noticeable price differences reported by ADAC.
  2. Driving from Koblenz towards the freeway, motorists may encounter price disparities at petrol stations located along the freeway versus those near the exit, as indicated by ADAC's study.
  3. The energy-efficient E10 fuel is often more costly at petrol stations located within freeway service areas, contrasting the results from a nearby petrol station in Saarland, as revealed by ADAC's investigation.
  4. In Wittlich, motorists can save approximately 49 cents per liter of diesel and 48 cents per liter of E10 fuel by choosing a petrol station located off the freeway rather than at the nearby rest stop, according to ADAC's analysis.
  5. The automobile club ADAC advises drivers to consider fueling their cars in Petrol stations outside the freeway before commencing their journey to save money, as revealed in their findings about price disparities between freeway and exit-located petrol stations.
  6. The price differences observed by ADAC in their study between freeway rest stops and nearby petrol stations can result in significant savings for consumers, evidenced by a potential saving of nearly 20 euros per 50-liter tank filling nationwide.
  7. On the A6 freeway, the consumer can benefit from lower fuel prices at a station in Waldmohr as opposed to the Homburg-Saar South rest area, saving 38 cents per liter for diesel and 51 cents per liter for E10 fuel, according to the ADAC's findings.
  8. Defying justification, the ADAC discovered noticeable price gaps between freeway rest stops and nearby petrol stations in their sample comparison, urging drivers to tank outside the freeway or choose cheaper stations before their journey for monetary savings and increased competition pressure.
  9. Driving on the A1 freeway, motorists traveling from Rhineland-Palatinate to another destination may encounter significant price differences between freeway rest stops and neighboring petrol stations, as indicated by ADAC's research, with a potential saving of approximately 49 cents per liter for diesel and 48 cents per liter for E10 fuel.
