Champions League - Reform of the premier class: what the Swiss model is changing
From the coming Champions League season, soccer fans will have to learn a new term: the Swiss model. This is because the preliminary round in its previous form has been history in the top flight since late Wednesday evening. From the 2024/25 season, there will no longer be eight groups of four teams, two of which will reach the round of 16.
Instead, a reform that has been in place since May 2022 will come into force. The Champions League will become a kind of league with 36 clubs, all of which will be in the same table. This also applies to the Europa League and the Conference League, in which the previous group stage will also be abolished.
The new game mode will definitely lead to an increased workload for the clubs in the premier leagues. Two additional group matches will be added, and there will also be an additional knockout round for some of the participants: the play-offs for the round of 16. The fact that clubs such as FC Bayern or Manchester City are not guaranteed to progress after four or five matches, as has been the case up to now, could make things even more exciting.
Each Champions League club initially plays four home and four away games in the league and faces eight different opponents. The opponents are drawn from the large pool. There will still be draw pots sorted according to national success and UEFA coefficient. At the end of the group stage, 36 clubs will have played eight matches each. Places one to eight in the table will progress directly to the round of 16. In the knockout round, the path from the round of 16 to the final is then predetermined.
Places nine to 24 will play off for the remaining eight places in the additional knockout round. The eight seeded teams (places one to eight) then meet the play-off winners in the round of 16. From then on, the Champions League will continue in the usual knockout format until the final in Munich on May 31, 2025.
