Referendum on planned refugee accommodation in Bützow
Around 6,500 residents of Bützow (Rostock district) who are entitled to vote can decide in a referendum on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on plans to build refugee accommodation. The question at issue is whether the town should be allowed to lease or sell its own land and properties to the district of Rostock for the construction of shared accommodation for refugees.
There is also the possibility of Bützow building accommodation for a maximum of 120 people itself and then leasing it to the district, thus avoiding the accommodation previously planned by the district near the school. The result of the vote is expected later this evening. A majority of valid votes is sufficient for a decision if this majority is at least 25 percent of those entitled to vote.
Despite the referendum, some municipalities in the region have continued their support for refugee migration. The outcome of the vote in Bützow could have implications for future refugee accommodation arrangements in nearby municipalities.
