Museums - Redesigned Schumann House opens in Düsseldorf
The city of Düsseldorf has spent four years extensively renovating the former home of the famous musical couple Clara and Robert Schumann. On Friday, the new museum opened its doors to visitors for the first time. Around 100 exhibits relating to the couple are on display. They come from the state capital's extensive Schumann collection and will be regularly exchanged. They also include numerous pieces of music written by Robert Schumann, such as the "Rhenish Symphony", which can also be heard on site.
For three years, from 1852 to 1855, the composer Robert and his wife, the pianist Clara, lived in the house in Düsseldorf's old town together with their seven children. The composer created around a third of his work during his time in Düsseldorf. According to the city, the renovation work and furnishing of the museum cost around 7.7 million euros. The work was complex. The building had to be renovated both in line with its listed status and to make it barrier-free. The money for this came from grants from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as from private donors and foundations.
There had been a long-running dispute between the city and cellist Thomas Beckmann, who had lived there for decades, over the Schumann House in Düsseldorf's old town.
