Over the past year, a record number of individuals in Lower Saxony have become naturalized as reported by the State Statistical Office in Hanover. This is the highest number since tracking began in 2000 with 16,868 people who now call Germany home. Of this number, 9,326 men and 7,542 women successfully went through the process, with Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Poland, and Iran being the top five nationalities represented. Notably, 531 individuals from Ukraine also gained citizenship within this time frame.

At the national level, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden said that the most recent year saw the highest number of naturalizations since the turn of the millennium. Comparing numbers to the previous year, there was a 19% increase in naturalizations. This increase comes on the heels of a 28% rise in the previous year-on-year comparison, resulting in approximately 200,100 foreigners acquiring German citizenship in 2023.

The much-anticipated reform of the German citizenship law is set to be enacted on June 27th. As a result, candidates for citizenship will now be able to apply after five years of residence in Germany instead of the previous eight, while those with "special integration efforts" will be able to do so in just three years. This new regulation is expected to speed up the process and make it easier for foreigners to officially become part of the country.
