The Jewish Central Council bestows this year's Leo Baeck Prize upon Hans-Joachim Wetzke, acknowledging his dedication towards combating antisemitism. For years, the CEO of Bundesliga football team Borussia Dortmund has been an advocate for an inclusive society, as noted by the Council.

Fighting against antisemitism is a cause dear to his heart, a commitment he has infused into his professional endeavors, the Council stated. With Wetzke at the helm, BVB has become a vital ally in the crusade against antisemitism, pioneering the way.

The honorary event will transpire on November 13 in Berlin, with North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President, Hendrik Wüst (CDU), serving as the laudator. Wüst voiced his admiration for Wetzke's involvement with BVB and his unwavering support for the Jewish community on the online platform X.

The accolade, boasting a monetary prize of 10,000 euros, pays tribute to Rabbi Leo Baeck (1873-1956), who served as the spiritual guide for German Jews during the Nazi era. Notable recipients of this award since its establishment in 1957 include former leaders like Richard von Weizsäcker (1994), Roman Herzog (1998), and Christian Wulff (2011), as well as Angela Merkel (2007) and most recently, Federal Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir (Greens) in 2022.

People from various walks of life have taken notice of Wetzke's efforts in combating antisemitism. His leadership at Borussia Dortmund has inspired many to join the fight against this prejudice.
