Transcendence - Reappraisal commissioner praises Stasi review in the state parliament
Saxony-Anhalt's Commissioner for Reappraisal Birgit Neumann-Becker has praised the decision to reappraise the Stasi in the state parliament as an "important sign of political transparency". This is a good opportunity to be open with voters about the political biographies of members of parliament, Neumann-Becker said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt set up a committee to investigate members of the state parliament for their activities for the Stasi. A large majority from the CDU, SPD, FDP, Greens and AfD voted in favor. Seven Left Party MPs voted against and four Left Party MPs abstained. The parliamentary group does not want to participate in the committee and does not want to send a representative.
Neumann-Becker criticized the Left Party for not submitting to the regular review process, even though the reviews under the Stasi Records Act were carried out according to transparent and constitutional criteria. "In my view, an important democratic opportunity to create transparency is being wasted here."

The decision to reappraise the Stasi's activities in Saxony-Anhalt's history was initially initiated in the state parliament, echoing Neumann-Becker's praise for the move as a step towards political transparency. Following this, the state parliament also established a committee to investigate the past actions of its own members associated with the Stasi, garnering support from a substantial majority of parties.
