German football association DFB plans to pay honorarium for assistant referees - RB Leipzig Advances to Essen for the Cup; Jena Faces Leverkusen
In the initial round of the DFB-Pokal, RB Leipzig will go up against Rot-Weiss Essen, a third-division team. This was revealed during the draw held at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on Saturday. Nils Petersen drew his ex-team FC Carl Zeiss Jena, which won the Thuringia state cup for the 15th time and the fifth time consecutively, against Bayer Leverkusen, the title holder and German champion. 1. FC Magdeburg, a second-division side, will be heading to Kickers Offenbach, a third-division team.
Dynamo Dresden, a third-division and Saxony cup winner, will meet Fortuna from Düsseldorf, who narrowly missed earning promotion to the Bundesliga during the promotion playoffs against Bochum. This matchup existed back in 1995, when the Rhinelanders emerged victorious 3:1 in the first round at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion.
FC Erzgebirge Aue, a third-division team, will be welcoming Borussia Mönchengladbach from the Bundesliga. They had played against each other in the 2010/2011 season, with the Saxons losing 1:3 in the first round.
Third-division relegated and state cup victor Hallescher FC will play against FC St. Pauli, the recent Bundesliga newcomer.
The first-round matches will be held between August 16th and 19th, a week before the Bundesliga's start. Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart, the Supercup participants, will have their matches scheduled for August 27th and 28th.
