Suspect in Maddie case - Rape trial against Christian B. continues

The trial against Christian B., who is also a suspect in the Maddie case, continues on Friday (9:00 am) in Braunschweig. Before the Regional Court, the 47-year-old must account for five serious sexual offenses that he is alleged to have committed in Portugal. It concerns three rapes and two cases of child sexual abuse between 2000 and 2017.

Two days before the next hearing date, the chamber lifted the arrest warrant against the defendant because there was no longer a pressing suspicion. It is not excluded that this decision will be discussed again on Friday. The man remains in custody due to another conviction.

In the past few weeks, the trial has made only slow progress with more than 20 hearing days. In the last hearing at the end of June, there were no significant new developments. Previously, several hearing dates had fallen due to the illness of a judge.

The proceedings have attracted great interest above all because the defendant is also a suspect in the Maddie case. However, the Maddie case is not the subject of this trial. The investigations into the disappearance of the three-year-old British girl Maddie McCann from a Portuguese holiday resort in Praia da Luz in May 2007 are still ongoing.

  1. Maddie's case, where Christian B. is also a suspect, continues to garner international attention.
  2. Despite being released from arrest for the Portugal-related charges, Christian B. remains in custody due to a conviction in Great Britain.
  3. The abuse trial against Christian B. in Lower Saxony, Germany, has witnessed slow progress with over 20 hearing days so far.
  4. The 47-year-old is facing serious charges in Portugal, including three rapes and two instances of child sexual abuse that took place between 2000 and 2017.
  5. In contrast, the Maddie case is a separate investigation, though it has added to the media frenzy surrounding this trial in Brunswick.
  6. The children who were victims in the Portugal case have not been publicly identified, in accordance with judicial discretion and ethical considerations.
