Social setting - Ramelow Prime Minister shares joy with godchildren.
In Thuringia, Bodo Ramelow, the Prime Minister and a member of the Left Party, holds the title of godfather for a remarkable 133 children. This prestigious position is a result of his role as Minister President, which comes with the honorary Godparenthood tradition for children from larger families. On a recent Saturday, he hosted a Godchild Festival for these kids in Schönstedt, a town within the Unstrut-Hainich District. This event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, featured coffee, cake and a range of fun activities for the children.
The concept of these gatherings was initially conceived by the former Prime Minister Dieter Althaus (CDU) in 2003. Since the last event that took place in 2022, Ramelow has taken on 44 extra honorary godparenthoods, translating to a total of 133 godchildren under his wing. Ramelow expressed his gratitude for these families, who make parenting numerous children a priority, saying, "Being a godfather is highly special. Handling all the challenges associated with larger families is no small feat."
Thuringia's Prime Ministers traditionally offer godparenthood to families with six or more children and, occasionally, those with triplets. The appointment comes with a monetary gift. This role officially concludes when the children reach the age of six.
