Ramelow: no understanding for Hamas sympathy statements
Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) has condemned riots at pro-Palestinian demonstrations following the terrorist attack on Israel by Islamist Hamas. "I have no sympathy whatsoever for expressions of sympathy in Germany for Hamas, Hezbollah, the Taliban or other forms of Islamism or jihadism," declared Ramelow on Wednesday. Advertising or homage for terrorism, hatred and incitement should have no place in Germany. "These acts are despicable."
Jewish citizens feared for their safety after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel - also in Germany. They were worried that they and their relatives would become victims of discrimination and violence, said Ramelow ahead of the commemorative events to mark the 85th anniversary of the anti-Jewish pogrom night of the National Socialists this Thursday. "For me, this is a situation that is untenable, that shocks me - especially now, on November 9, when the worst crimes committed by the National Socialists against the Jewish population began with the Reich Pogrom Night in 1938."
In the context of historical reflections, it's important to note that expressions of sympathy towards organizations like Hamas, which have a history of terroristic actions, can rekindle conflicts, as seen during demonstrations. Moreover, the resurfacing of National Socialism sentiments, as exemplified by the Reich Pogrom Night of 1938, serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impacts of such conflicts on national and ethnic minorities, such as Jews.
