- Rain floods Hamburg streets - tree falls on car
Heavy rainfall on Wednesday led to flooded streets in the east and southeast of Hamburg. In the Bergedorf district, several cars got stuck in knee-high floods, as observed by a dpa photographer. On sloped streets, raging streams formed. Many basements were also flooded. The Hamburg fire department reported around 350 weather-related deployments.
In Bergedorfer Straße, a tree fell onto a car, trapping both occupants, as a fire department spokesman explained. A second tree threatened to fall onto the vehicle, but firefighters managed to free both people unharmed from the car.
Before that, thunderstorms had passed over the city. The German Weather Service had warned of local heavy rain, which could also be severe in isolated cases.
The intense thunderstorms preceding the heavy rainfall were predicted by the German Weather Service, who warned about potential local downpours, some of which could be severe. Following the weather event, numerous tree branches and debris were scattered across the streets due to high winds.
