Railway: diversions and closures between Cologne and Bonn

Customers can expect restrictions and cancellations in the coming weeks for three new electronic control centers in the Rhineland.

- Railway: diversions and closures between Cologne and Bonn

Due to the ongoing expansion and modernization of signal boxes in Cologne and Bonn, train passengers and commuters can expect disruptions in the coming weeks. This expansion will also affect long-distance traffic to Berlin, Brussels, and Northern Germany. According to the railway's announcement, the track between Bonn and Cologne will be completely closed from Friday (23.8., 21:00) to Monday (26.8., 5:00) for expansion. ICE trains on the Koblenz to Berlin route will start and end in Cologne.

From 6 September (21:00) to 11 October (5:00), trains between Cologne and Koblenz will be rerouted via the right bank of the Rhine. Stops in Cologne, Bonn, Remagen, and Andernach will be omitted, and travel time will increase by around ten minutes.

Disruptions also for travelers from Northern Germany

From 13 to 27 September, ICE trains on the Bonn to Berlin route will start and end in Cologne. From 28 September, the railway will cancel these express trains on this route. ICE trains on the Koblenz/Bonn to Berlin route via Cologne, the Ruhr area, and Hannover will also start in Cologne from 13 to 27 September. After that, from 28 September, they will start in Wuppertal.

Travelers from Northern Germany and the Benelux countries should also expect disruptions from 23 September. Some trains will start and end in Düsseldorf, ICE trains from Brussels will stop at Cologne-Ehrenfeld or Cologne Messe/Deutz instead. Some ICE trains between Cologne and Frankfurt will also be canceled.

Local and regional traffic will also experience disruptions.

Announcement

Due to the rerouting of trains between Cologne and Koblenz, which is part of the Rhineland region, travelers will encounter stops omitted and increased travel time from September 6 to October 11. Additionally, commuters from Northern Germany and the Benelux countries may experience disruptions during the same period as some trains are rerouted to start or end in Düsseldorf or have stops changed in Cologne.
