Rhine-Main area - Railroad warning strike hits commuters and travelers in Hesse

Rail travelers and commuters must also prepare for considerable restrictions in Hesse due to the latest warning strike by the train drivers' union GDL. The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund announced that regional trains and suburban trains would also be affected by the work stoppages from Thursday evening. The German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) had called on its members to take part in the warning strike on passenger services from 10.00 pm. It was already scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. for freight traffic. The warning strike is expected to end this Friday evening at 10 p.m., it said.

According to Deutsche Bahn, disruptions are expected even before the warning strike begins, as well as afterwards. An emergency timetable with a greatly reduced service will apply during the strike. Deutsche Bahn has given travelers the option of postponing their trips planned for Thursday or Friday and using their tickets at another time. The train service has been canceled, the railroad announced. Reservations could be canceled free of charge.

The GDL 's action was met with criticism from associations. The passenger association Pro Bahn in Lollar criticized the short notice of the announcement and called on the union to "cancel the warning strike immediately". "A gap of just over 24 hours between announcement and implementation is unreasonable for passengers. There must be at least 48 hours between the announcement and the start of the strike," the association stated. In addition, the day of the strike was a Friday in the run-up to Christmas.

Dirk Pollert, Managing Director of the Association of Hessian Business Associations (VHU), criticized the fact that the union was depriving rail customers of the opportunity to plan alternative travel options due to the very short notice of the warning strike as particularly inconsiderate and irresponsible. One gets the impression that the great damage to rail customers is being deliberately calculated and used as additional leverage.

With this action, the GDL wants to increase the pressure in the current collective bargaining round. Among other things, it wants to emphasize its demand for a reduction in working hours for shift workers.
