Railroad - Railroad line between Halle and Eichenberg to be modernized

The heavily trafficked railway line between Halle and Thuringian Eichenberg is to be modernized. The goal is to make the railway line between Halle and Hessian Kassel more reliable.

Approximately 625 million Euro will flow into new electronic interlockings and the barrier-free expansion of the train station Lutherstadt Eisleben, as Deutsche Bahn announced at the symbolic start of the works. In addition, the Saale Bridge west of Halle is to be renewed and the overtaking lanes for larger freight trains are to be extended.

The DB states that these measures will make the line overall more efficient, as trains for passengers and freight will be more flexible and reliable in Central Germany in the future. The construction work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. In later major renovations in the region, the line is to serve as a bypass.

"Only with an attractive offer does the railway play its trump cards as a real alternative to the car," said Saxony-Anhalt's Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP). That the heavily trafficked Halle-Kassel line is now to be modernized in such a complex way is a good, right, and important signal. "The Halle metropolitan region is thus further profiling itself as a performance-capable and top modern transport hub for rail transport."

Thuringia's Infrastructure Minister Susanna Karawanskij (Linke) also described the planned construction measures as "an important signal." "Making the existing rail infrastructure more efficient and robust will not only benefit passenger transport, but also freight transport."

  1. The modernization of the railway line between Halle and Thuringian Eichenberg, which is heavily trafficked, also extends to neighboring Saxony-Anhalt, specifically Kassel in Hesse.
  2. German Railways, or Deutsche Bahn, has emphasized that the upgrades along the railway line between Halle and Hessian Kassel will significantly improve traffic for both passengers and freight trains, including on the railroad line that connects Kassel to Thuringia.
  3. The current railroad line between Halle and Thuringian Eichenberg will also see improvements, such as the use of new electronic interlockings and the expansion of the barrier-free train station in Lutherstadt Eisleben, thanks in part to the significant investment of 625 million Euro from Deutsche Bahn.
  4. The renovation of the Saale Bridge west of Halle and the addition of overtaking lanes for larger freight trains are also key components of German Railways' plans to enhance the Halle-Kassel railroad line, aiming to create a more efficient and reliable railroad network in Central Germany.
  5. German Railways has expressed that the modernization of the railroad line between Halle and Hessian Kassel aligns with their vision for a more attractive railway system that serves as a viable alternative to automobile travel, especially in regions like Thuringia and neighboring states like Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse.
