Railroad begins expansion of Groningen-Bremen line

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is beginning the expansion of the railroad line between Bremen and Groningen in the Netherlands, also known as the Wunderline. This Friday (12:00 noon), representatives of the railroad company and politicians will give the official go-ahead for the construction work in the municipality of Westoverledingen in the district of Leer. In the first stage of the project, the section between the German-Dutch border and Ihrhove is to be modernized. The existing interlocking technology there is also to be replaced by a modern electronic interlocking.

The Wunderline is the name given to the two-stage expansion and upgrading of the existing 173-kilometre railroad line between Bremen and Groningen - the majority of which is on the German side. The project is intended to offer travelers faster connections. The journey time between the two cities is to be reduced to less than 2:15 hours. The new Friesenbrücke bridge over the Ems is also part of the route. Due to the destruction of the Friesenbrücke bridge, there is currently no through train connection between Groningen and Bremen. Before the destruction, the journey time was 2:43 hours. The construction work is due to be completed by the 2024/2025 timetable change.

The expansion of the railroad line will significantly impact traffic in the construction area. This Project aims to enhance transportation between Bremen and Groningen, resulting in reduced journey times for travelers.
