Race to catch up comes too late: Lübeck loses to Unterhaching

Third division soccer team VfB Lübeck suffered their next defeat against SpVgg Unterhaching despite a comeback. Coach Lukas Pfeiffer's team lost 2:3 (0:3) at the Lohmühle on Saturday. Sebastian Maier (2nd minute) and former Lübeck player Patrick Hobsch (5th, 39th) scored for Unterhaching. Cyrill Akono (53) and Pascal Breier (77) were successful for Lübeck. The defeat meant that the Hanseatic side slipped to 17th place in the table.

A week earlier, the promoted team had lost 4-0 at SC Verl. This was also noticeable in the stadium, which was significantly less well attended than usual with 4,381 spectators. Coach Pfeiffer reacted to the latest defeat with four changes to the starting eleven, including veteran Mirko Boland on the bench. There was no visible improvement at first, but instead the visitors took an early lead after a double deflected shot from Maier. A short time later, Hobsch scored from close range after a free-kick cross from Maier to make it 2-0.

VfB improved, but a goal by Lübeck's Tarik Gözüsirin was disallowed for offside. Hobsch scored again before the break instead. Lübeck became much more effective in the second half. Akono scored the equalizer with his head after a corner kick, and substitute Breier scored after a beautiful pass from Gözüsirin. VfB central defender Sören Reddemann hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from almost 25 meters. The equalizer was never scored.

Despite the comeback attempt, VfB Lübeck lost their 3rd league match against Unterhaching, with former player Hobsch scoring thrice for the visitors. The defeat left VfB Lübeck in 17th place, struggling to avoid relegation.

In the 3rd league, VfB Lübeck, currently in 17th place, faced a tough challenge against Unterhaching, a team that featured their former player Hobsch, who scored three goals in the match.
