Question remains open over CDU/CSU contending for chancellor position
CDU head Friedrich Merz and North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst are rumored to be potential candidates for chancellor. According to Söder, the two have a close working relationship. "I'm confident we'll find a great solution together," he said.
Söder praised the Union's electoral win on Sunday as a result of the candidates' efforts, as well as the work of their party leaders. However, he admitted that there are ongoing discussions within the CDU concerning the chancellor nomination. This likely refers to Wüst's own stance on the matter, as he believes the selection process isn't finalized yet.
In an interview with ARD, Wüst stated that there's no need to limit the Union's chancellor options to just Merz and Söder. "All state premiers have experience in government and the qualifications for being a chancellor candidate," Wüst pointed out. "The question is still open, otherwise we would have made a decision. And until a decision is made, it remains open," he added, potentially hinting at his own aspirations.
