Putin arrives in Kazakhstan for visit - meeting with Erdogan planned
During his visit to Kazakhstan, Putin is likely to meet his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well, Ankara's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Monday. The last meeting between the two leaders took place in September 2022 in Sochi, Russia. Turkey has been trying to maintain relations with both countries since the beginning of Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Ankara has also offered to act as a mediator in the conflict on multiple occasions.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) comprises nine countries that represent approximately half of the world population. Its permanent members include the current host Kazakhstan, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, which joined last year. It is expected that Belarus will be admitted to the organization this year. The decision was made at a virtual summit organized by India last year.
According to the Kremlin, the heads of state and government of the member countries will discuss "the current situation and prospects for further deepening comprehensive cooperation within the organization and improving its activities" during their annual meeting.
