Crime - Pursuit with police helicopter after car theft
Police in Brandenburg chased a suspected thief with a helicopter - as it later turned out, he was driving a car stolen in Thuringia. After about an hour and a half, the man was caught early Thursday evening on the highway 12 between Fürstenwalde and Briesen, the police announced on Friday. Officers initially wanted to check a conspicuous van in Fürstenwalde. The 43-year-old driver of the vehicle reportedly drove off, jumped out of the car at a parking lot and fled on foot. Using a police helicopter, the officers were able to follow the fugitive's tracks in the snow.
The man had no driver's license and said he had wanted to drive the car to Slubice in Poland for an acquaintance, according to the police. It transpired that the van had been stolen from a building site in Illmenau. After a forensic investigation, it was returned to its owner.
