Purchasing power in the Rhein-Pfalz district highest in the country

In the Rhineland-Palatinate districts and independent cities, purchasing power is highest in the Rhein-Pfalz district. If the per capita annual income is adjusted for the regional cost of living, it amounts to 28,773 euros, according to calculations by the Institute of the German Economy (IW). This puts the Rhein-Pfalz district in sixth place among the 400 counties, districts and cities in Germany.

It is followed by the district of Bad Dürkheim (28,686 euros) and the independent city of Neustadt an der Weinstraße (28,225 euros). Ludwigshafen brings up the rear in Rhineland-Palatinate with a price-adjusted income of 20,562.

It is striking that the cities tend to lag behind. In the state capital Mainz, for example, the nominal per capita income is higher than in most districts - but the cost of living is much more expensive there, for example due to rents. There are a total of 12 independent cities and 24 districts in the federal state.

The calculations are based on a regional price index developed by the IW and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) as of 2022 and income data from the Federal Statistical Office as of 2021. Housing costs were the decisive factor for major differences.

Consumers in the Rhein-Pfalz district, with their high purchasing power due to the region's high income and relatively low costs, may have more discretionary income to spend on non-essential items compared to consumers in other districts with lower income levels and higher costs of living. The price sensitivity of consumers in the district of Ludwigshafen, on the other hand, may be higher due to their lower adjusted income.
