Purchasing power highest in Hesse in the Hochtaunus district
In the Hessian districts and independent cities, purchasing power is by far the highest in the Hochtaunus district. If per capita income is adjusted for the regional cost of living, it amounts to EUR 30,983, according to calculations by the German Economic Institute (IW). The Hochtaunus district, located in the suburbs of Frankfurt, thus ranks second among the 400 districts, counties and cities in Germany.
It is followed by the Main-Taunus district (EUR 27,682) and the Rheingau-Taunus district (EUR 26,766). Bringing up the rear in Hesse is the city of Offenbach am Main with a price-adjusted income of EUR 19,082.
It is striking that Wiesbaden is the first city to come in at 19th place (EUR 24,008). Although the nominal per capita income in the Hessian state capital is higher than in most districts, the cost of living is much more expensive there, for example due to rents. In total, there are five independent cities and 21 districts in Hesse.
The calculations are based on a regional price index developed by the IW and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) as of 2022 and income data from the Federal Statistical Office as of 2021. Housing costs were the decisive factor for major differences.
In the Hochtaunus district, consumers can potentially afford higher priced goods due to its leading income level among Hessian districts. Consequently, changes in prices might have a less significant impact on the purchasing power of consumers compared to lower income areas.
