Radicalism - Punks plot to stage protests against racism on Sylt this weekend.
A controversy surrounding racism on the island of Sylt has prompted punks to organize demonstrations in the area this weekend. These demonstrations are being held under the banner "Make some noise against the right!" According to a statement made on Instagram last night, a march is set for Saturday afternoon in Westerland, to be followed by a vigil with music at Kampen's village bar, where racial slurs were hurled at guests over Easter. On Sunday, a running protest is scheduled to take place.
Speaking to "Spiegel," organizer Jonas Hötger stated, "We welcome anyone who wants to stand up against the right-wing shift in society." The protest methods will involve using "music boxes, posters, banners, placards, and banner wagons, as well as playing music."
In addition to the march organized by Aktion Sylt, the group "Sylt against the Right" has planned their own demonstration. The punks have called for a participation in this weekend's protest as well. "We aim to bring our own speeches and visit different locations," Hötger added.
Last weekend, a short video from a local party on Sylt surfaced across the nation after guests could be heard shouting racist chants like "Foreigners out" and "Germany for the Germans" directed at "L'amour toujours." The video quickly went viral online. Politicians up to Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed their shock. Currently, the Flensburg Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating a woman and two men for incitement to hatred. Against one of the men, there is also a probe underway for using symbols of a constitutionally inappropriate organization. Reports of similar incidents are also increasing.
In the past two years, Aktion Sylt has participated in demonstrations on Sylt, with their focus against the capitalist system. There have always been complaints about noise, garbage, and foul odors. The group is scheduled to set up their tents once again on Sylt, starting from July 22nd. They plan to remain there for several weeks.
