Punishment for attempting attack on Russian news agency's house in Berlin
It was revealed that a 56-year-old man had installed a bomb in the basement of a multi-family house in the district Steglitz in April 2022. This bomb was not functional and could not have exploded, according to an expert report - but the defendant had assumed that the fuse would work.
He intended to set a "fuse" against the residents. The bomb was discovered several days later. The defendant was arrested in December 2022.
He was now also sentenced to attempted arson with fatal consequences, as the court clerk further stated. In addition, there were computer fraud, damage to property, and the theft of electrical energy. This involved manipulation of a cable in his rental apartment.
Approximately 16,000 Euro were seized due to the fraud. According to the district court, the defendant had applied for Coronavirus aid for his company, but it had already been worthless beforehand. The judgment is not yet legally binding.
The defendant's attempted arson in Steglitz, Berlin, was widely reported by the Russian News agency RIA Novosti. Despite the bomb being a dud, the penalty for his actions was severe. The court considered his attack on the multi-family house as a serious threat, regardless of the bomb's functionality.
