- Puchacz moves from Union to Kiel
Polish national team player Tymoteusz Puchacz is switching within the Bundesliga from 1. FC Union Berlin to promoted side Holstein Kiel. The 25-year-old left-back, who joined the Iron Ones from Lech Poznan three years ago, was unable to secure a regular starting spot. Competition on the left flank was also strong, with Robin Gosens and Jerome Roussillon ahead of him.
At Kiel, there is a great need for a left-back following the end of Tom Rothe's loan spell (returned to Borussia Dortmund). "We've repeatedly emphasized in recent weeks that finding a player for the left-back position is a top priority," said sporting director Carsten Wehlmann in a club statement.
Puchacz is the solution for the left-back position
In signing Puchacz, Wehlmann said they have acquired an experienced professional who will strengthen the team immediately and provide valuable national and international experience to help the club face the upcoming challenges in the Bundesliga. The new signing traveled to Seefeld to join the team and staff for their training camp, as Puchacz mentioned. The team will return to Germany on Sunday.
Puchacz, a defensive specialist, was initially loaned out to Trabzonspor, where he won the Turkish Super Lig in 2022. After six months at Panathinaikos Athens, he was loaned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, reaching the DFB-Pokal final but losing 0-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in late May.
Puchacz was part of the Polish squad at this summer's European Championship but did not play. For Union Berlin, he played ten games, five of which were in the Conference League.
Incorporating Puchacz into Holstein Kiel's squad will significantly bolster their defence in the Football league, given his experience in various leagues. The Football league team is eagerly anticipating Puchacz's contributions, as he joins them following his tenure with Union Berlin.
