District Office Reinickendorf - Public order officers equipped with 20 safety helmets
In order to better protect the employees of its own public order office, the Reinickendorf district office has procured 20 protective helmets. The helmets will be used immediately, for example in joint operations with the police, as the district office announced on Wednesday. District councillor Julia Schrod-Thiel (CDU) presented the protective equipment on Wednesday. "The significant increase in the number of incidents of violence against field staff speaks for itself", the politician was quoted as saying in a statement. In addition, employees are increasingly deployed in extreme weather conditions such as storms or together with the police.
According to the district office, there were around 720 assaults on the 45 field staff and 15 traffic officers in 2022. A stab-proof vest has been part of the staff's equipment since 2019. Now the helmets are being added, which are a model that is also used by the police.
The protective and emergency helmets should only be worn in special situations, such as extreme weather, cordoning off areas in cooperation with the police, customs, fire department and THW or bomb disposal operations. In such joint operations, all emergency services should be equally well protected against possible attacks.

The safety helmets procured by the Reinickendorf district office are similar to those used by the municipal police force. The regulatory office overseeing internal security in Berlin's municipalities might consider implementing similar safety measures for their field service personnel. Severe incidents of violence against field staff and traffic officers have been reported in Reinickendorf, prompting the district office to invest in protective measures beyond stab-proof vests. The increased use of protective equipment by public order officers could serve as a model for other districts and municipalities in Berlin.
