In an apartment building in Langweid in the district of Augsburg, a marksman is alleged to have killed three neighbors with shots to the head. The man is currently on trial for three counts of murder at Augsburg District Court.

Triple murder trial - Psychiatrists assess defendant's psyche differently

In the process of evaluating the triple murder at a multi-family house in Langweid, in the Augsburg district, experts assess the defendant's psychology differently. The court-appointed forensic expert testified in the trial at the Augsburg Regional Court that he did not observe a personality disorder in the 65-year-old man. However, a defense-appointed colleague of the expert saw indications of significant limitations in the man.

The expert opinions are crucial for the court to determine possible restricted criminal responsibility or even criminal incapacity of the defendant for the verdict. The prosecution assumes that the defendant's insight and ability to control were not impaired.

Forensic expert Felix Segmiller testified that the defendant's thinking was paranoid tainted and he had compulsive and schizoid personality traits. However, these traits, according to the expert, are not sufficient for a personality disorder.

Defense expert sees further abnormalities

Munich psychiatrist Hanna Ziegert, on the other hand, identified further anomalies. She referred to the man's heart disease and other organic illnesses and diagnosed him with an anxiety disorder, depression, and a possible beginning dementia. Ziegert was appointed as an additional expert by the defendant's attorney.

In this trial, a German citizen is charged with triple murder and two attempted murders. According to the prosecution, in July 2023, after a long neighborhood dispute, the man shot a 49 and 52-year-old married couple in the shared stairwell with headshots, effectively executing them.

Subsequently, he allegedly shot a 72-year-old neighbor through her apartment door with a shot to the head. The violent act was documented by one of the victims with an audio recording, indicating that the killing of the three people took only a few seconds.

Two dependents of the deceased elderly woman were then shot through a door by the defendant, according to the prosecution. After a brief escape, he was apprehended and arrested by the police.

The 65-year-old claims to have memory lapses for the time of the crime. He mentioned a "blackout" shortly after his arrest. The judgment in this trial is expected to be announced at the end of July.

  3. Defense-appointed psychiatrist Hanna Ziegert, based in Munich, provided further expert opinions and diagnosed the defendant with an anxiety disorder, depression, and a possible beginning dementia.
  4. The outcome of the court process, which is expected to conclude at the end of July, will hinge on the evaluation of these expert opinions, as they may impact the defendant's potential restricted criminal responsibility or criminal incapacity.
