Procedures are being adjusted. - Psychiatrist to testify in airport hostage-taking case.

Tomorrow (9:30 am), a psychiatrist will appear in court during the trial of the Hamburg airport hostage-taker. As a professional expert, her role will be to assess if the suspect is culpable or not. The public prosecutor has filed charges against the 35-year-old for hostage-taking, kidnapping minors, aggravated assault, and multiple weapon-related offenses. In November 2022, the man deceived his way into his ex-wife's apartment in Lower Saxony (Stade), threatened her with a gun, and kidnapped their young child.

Once in possession of the child, he drove straight to the Hamburg airport, broke through security barriers with a rental car, and made his way as far as the runway. He then lit two Molotov cocktails, fired three shots into the air, and threatened to detonate what appeared to be an explosive belt on himself and his hostage. The standoff continued for 18 hours until the 35-year-old Turk eventually surrendered and was arrested. The "explosive belt" turned out to be a hoax. During the trial at the District Court, the defendant has confessed to most of the accusations against him.

The mother of the child described her ex-husband as an irritable, angry person. The man himself displayed similarly aggressive, loud behavior within the courtroom.

Police report from November 5th, 2023.
