Leipzig and Jena - Protests against extradition of "Maja" to Hungary

After the delivery of a presumably left-extremist person to Hungary, protests have been announced for Saturday in Leipzig and Jena. In Leipzig, according to the city, 400 female and male participants have registered, in Jena, according to the police, around 100 people are expected.

The delivery of the person known as "Maja" at the end of the previous week was heavily criticized by left-wing circles. The Federal Constitutional Court had prohibited the procedure in an emergency decision – however, the decision came too late. "Maja" was handed over to the Hungarian authorities an hour earlier.

Background is a criminal procedure that the Hungarian justice is conducting due to attacks on suspected right-wing extremists in Budapest. "Maja" is said to have been involved in it. She is a 23-year-old person born in Jena who identifies as non-binary.

According to the Federal Constitutional Court, the Hungarian authorities accuse "Maja" of being a member of a criminal organization since 2017. She was arrested in Berlin in the previous December and had been in custody since then.

  1. The announcement of protests against the delivery of "Maja" to Hungary has sparked a significant reaction in Germany, with demonstrations planned in both Leipzig and Jena.
  2. The police in Berline and Thuringia, particularly in Jena where "Maja" is from, are preparing for the expected large crowds during the protest marches and demonstrations.
  3. The controversy over the delivery of "Maja" to Hungary has led to discussions about the role of justice and the international transfer of suspects, with the German police and courts coming under scrutiny.
  4. Reports suggest that "Maja" was involved in crimes related to attacks on right-wing extremists in Budapest, and her alleged membership in a criminal organization has been a subject of debate in the German courts.
  5. In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Constitutional Court in Germany condemned the procedure of delivering "Maja" to Hungary, but it came too late, with "Maja" already being handed over to Hungarian authorities.
  6. The case of "Maja" has drawn attention to the European Union's principles of justice and human rights, with many questioning the legality of extradition in similar cases.
  7. The delivery of "Maja" to Hungary has caused a wave of protest and unrest across Germany, with many advocating for a revised process of transferring suspects between European countries, ensuring justice and respect for human rights.
