- Protesting Period and Public Showcase Opposing MSC-Agreement
Another "Action Week" and rally, led by the union Verdi and dock workers, are voicing their discontent towards MSC, a leading global shipping firm, attempting to join forces with Hamburg-based logistics giant, HHLA. According to André Kretschmar, Verdi's harbor representative, "We stick to our stance: This arrangement isn't beneficial for Hamburg." With this merger, political influence over the port would shift from elected officials to the Aponte family of MSC, who have no concern for public welfare.
MSC's Proposed Takeover of HHLA
The Hamburg Senate, in an attempt to fortify the Hamburg Port and Logistics AG (HHLA) and container handling, are looking to bring on board the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The city will maintain a 50.1% stake, while MSC will hold 49.9%. Beforehand, the city had approximately 70% ownership, with the remainder in public float.
In return, MSC has proposed expanding its cargo volume at HHLA terminals to one million standard containers annually by 2031. Additionally, the Swiss shipping firm intends to establish a new German headquarters in Hamburg and increase HHLA's equity capital by 450 million euros, collaborating with the city.**
Delayed Approval
The planned approval by the Hamburg Parliament was due before the summer recess. However, owing to the opposition's rejection during the last reading, the approval is now scheduled for September 4, the first day back after the summer break. With the red-green coalition's two-thirds majority in Parliament, the resolution in favor of the Senate is inevitable.**
Nonetheless, Verdi and dock workers remain defiant. They are concerned that the deal could jeopardize employment at HHLA and other port businesses like the General Harbor Operations (GHB) and lashing services. Furthermore, MSC would obtain substantial veto authority. Kretschmar urged parliament members: "Consider the concerns of workers and the expert criticism expressed during the Senate hearing before casting your vote." Critics had warned of a potential "historic blunder."
Planned Demonstration
The demonstration is planned for the upcoming Saturday. The march will commence at 2:00 PM from Landungsbrücken, moving past the town hall, and culminating at HHLA's headquarters in the Hafencity. Kretschmar invited Hamburg residents opposed to the deal to participate in the demonstration. The "Action Week" commenced on the previous Saturday with screenings, debate sessions, and opportunities for those interested to engage with the deal's finer details.**
During this period of contention, the dock workers and Verdi union are organizing a 'Week of action' to voice their disagreement with MSC's proposed takeover of HHLA. Despite the planned approval date being shifted to September 4, the union continues to push back, expressing concerns about potential job losses and MSC's veto authority.
