- Protection of rare plants: young cattle grazing on the brook

To safeguard rare plants, several young cattle will once again graze on the Brocken plateau in the coming weeks. Since Monday, ten one-year-old Harzer cattle have been standing on an approximately one-hectare area near the Brockengarten. The reddish-brown highland cattle will graze the area over the next two to three weeks.

The goal is to allow plants like the Brocken anemone to spread further on the mountain. After the animals have grazed the area, they will be returned to their herd of around 500 animals. This project has been ongoing since 2019.

Protecting the environment is the primary goal of allowing young cattle to graze on the Brocken plateau, as this practice helps in the natural propagation of rare plants such as the Brocken anemone. Implementing this method of conservation has been a part of ongoing initiatives since 2019.
