- Prosecutor's Office: Investigations against MPs are ongoing
After the immunity of a state parliament member of the Left party was lifted, investigations by the public prosecutor's office are underway due to suspicion of acquiring and possessing child pornography. "Evidence has been secured," said the spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Erfurt upon request. The investigation was initiated immediately after the immunity was lifted by the responsible parliamentary committee on Tuesday.
According to the public prosecutor's office, there were five judicial search warrants issued against the suspect MP. Two rooms in the state parliament, his residence, and two constituency offices were searched by the police. The secured evidence consists of computers and other data carriers, which are now being evaluated. The suspicion involves both the acquisition and possession of child pornographic material.
Left party supports investigations
The case breaks just as the election campaign is underway - elections for a new state parliament in Thuringia will take place on September 1. The entire leadership of the Thuringian Left party has reacted shocked and appalled to the allegations. "Until clarification, the affected MP should step down from all posts and duties," wrote Minister President Bodo Ramelow on the X platform. If the allegations are proven, he expects severe consequences. "It must be clarified quickly, thoroughly, and consistently." The Left party's parliamentary group leader, Steffen Dittes, pledged full support to the police and public prosecutor's office.
The Left party has expressed its full support for the ongoing investigations by The Office of the Prosecutor. The searches conducted by the police, as authorized by five judicial search warrants from The Office of the Prosecutor, have yielded computers and other data carriers for further evaluation.
