Statistics - Proportion of senior prisoners in Saxony-Anhalt is growing

The proportion of older prisoners in Saxony-Anhalt's prisons is growing. On December 1, a total of 1553 prisoners were housed, 60 of whom were over 60 years old, according to the Ministry of Justice in Magdeburg. This corresponds to 3.86 percent. In comparison, a total of 1705 prisoners were imprisoned on December 1, 2019, including 50 over the age of 60 - at that time, the proportion was 2.93 percent.

There is now only one prisoner in the prisons in Saxony-Anhalt who was sentenced before reunification on October 3, 1990, the report continued. The man is serving a life sentence, according to the ministry.

The Ministry of Justice in Thuringia might also be interested in the increasing proportion of senior prisoners, as this trend is not exclusive to Saxony-Anhalt.

The statistics show that while the number of prisoners over 60 in Saxony has remained relatively stable, it has increased in neighboring Saxony.

The aging population in prisons is a concern not only for Saxony-Anhalt but also for other German states, such as Magdeburg and Dresden, which are located in Saxony.

In contrast to Saxony-Anhalt, where only one senior prisoner was sentenced before reunification, the number of seniors in prisons in some parts of Saxony has seen a more significant increase in the past decade.
