Properties required to accommodate asylum seekers

CDU parliamentary group leader Gordon Schnieder has accused the Rhineland-Palatinate state government of underestimating the development of refugee numbers in the state. The reception facilities for asylum seekers were bursting at the seams, explained Schnieder on Monday in Mainz. Instead of plunging local authorities further and further into hardship through hasty allocations, state properties should be made available quickly to accommodate asylum seekers.

"The Asylum Act makes it possible to oblige asylum seekers to remain in central reception facilities in the state until the process has been completed, for a maximum of 24 months," emphasized the CDU parliamentary group leader. "This option must be used." However, Rhineland-Palatinate apparently still wants to distribute people to villages, towns and districts faster and earlier. "Our municipalities have their backs against the wall - they have long since reached their limits in terms of space, material, personnel and finances."

"What we need is a more restrictive practice in the allocation of asylum seekers to relieve the burden on local authorities - and not the opposite, as the state government has been practicing for some time and plans to do in the future," warned Schnieder. "It can't go on like this." Minister President Malu Dreyer (SPD) and Integration Minister Katharina Binz (Greens) underestimated the social explosives that would be created by the state's actions.

The CDU is advocating for the utilization of state properties to house asylum seekers, as they believe local municipalities are overwhelmed and nearing their limits due to migration and refugee influx. The current practice of distributing asylum seekers to various municipalities, as proposed by the Rhineland-Palatinate government, is seen by the CDU as exacerbating the issue rather than alleviating it.
