German top-flight football league - Promoted to sports director role at VfB Stuttgart is Wohlgemuth.
Fabian Wohlgemuth has been promoted from Sports Director to Sports Board at Champions League participant VfB Stuttgart, as announced by the football club on Wednesday. This move had already been hinted at by the supervisory board. Wohlgemuth will have a contract until June 30, 2027. The identity of the new Sports Director will be decided soon. There's a strong possibility that the head of the professional player department, Christian Gentner, who has worked closely with Wohlgemuth, will take on the role.
Wohlgemuth expressed his gratitude to the board and Tanja Gönner, the current chairman, for their trust. He recalled, "I quickly figured out the immense power and energy this club has" upon joining VfB. In his new role, Wohlgemuth will also be in charge of youth teams and the women's football department in Stuttgart.
Wohlgemuth joined VfB as Mislintat's successor in December 2022. The team managed to avoid relegation in the 2023 season in a dramatic fashion. The season before that, though, was a pleasant surprise with a vice championship finish. Wohlgemuth is seen as one of the driving forces behind Stuttgart's resurgence, alongside coach Sebastian Hoeneß, who he had recruited himself.
Choosing the new Sports Director took quite some time for the Swabians. Formerly, Alexander Wehrle had been fulfilling the role. However, following the analysis of the 2022/2023 season, Wehrle stated that he wanted to relinquish the position. There were several names being speculated beforehand. In the end, it turned out to be Wohlgemuth, as suggested by Wehrle several times earlier.
"I can say that some people might have considered 'carefulness before speed' to be excessive, but it was still crucial," said Supervisory Board Chairwoman Gönner. She is pleased that they have found the right candidate and are well prepared for the future.
