- Projected yield: Decreased production of grains and winter rapeseed
In the Saxony-Anhalt region this year, farmers are anticipated to gather less grain and winter rape compared to 2023. As stated by the Halle Statistical Office, the predicted harvest includes approximately 3.1 million metric tons of grain and 0.4 million tons of winter rape. This is a decrease of 4.5% and 11.4% compared to the yield from last year.
The projected yield per hectare for grain is increasing by 1.6% to 67.4 decitons, compared to 2023. On the other hand, the yield per hectare for winter rape is projected to decrease by 0.3% to 32.5 decitons.
Winter wheat still holds the title of the most significant field crop and grain in Saxony-Anhalt, with 256,300 hectares under cultivation and a predicted harvest of 1.9 million tons. This is a decrease of 8% compared to last year's yield.
The cultivated area for bread grains such as wheat and winter rye has declined by 9.1% to 331,500 hectares compared to 2023. The harvest quantity has also decreased by 5.9% to 2.2 million tons.
Autumnal Issues
Prolonged rainfall during the autumn of 2023 presented issues with the sowing of winter grains, according to data analysts. The area under cultivation for summer grains expanded as a result. A very wet spring with regional floods led to delayed sowing in some places, making certain fields inaccessible. Furthermore, devastating late frosts in April inflicted substantial damage on the early-developed vegetation.
Despite the challenges faced due to autumnal issues and severe weather conditions, such as prolonged rainfall, delayed sowing, and late frosts, the The statistics show that the farmers in the Saxony-Anhalt region still managed to harvest around 3.1 million metric tons of grain and 0.4 million tons of winter rape for 2024, albeit with a marginal decrease compared to 2023.
