Projected Slower Population Growth in Germany Extended Until 2022
Census data revealed population statistics for all cities and municipalities as of May 15, 2022. Surprisingly, Germany was home to around 1.6% fewer people than initially estimated.
Seven federal states exhibited below-average differences, with the most notable slumps being a 3.5% decrease each in Berlin, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. On the other hand, Bremen and Saarland showed population figures above the previously cited numbers.
Interestingly, there were also significant deviations in the foreign population. According to the 2022 census, roughly 10.9 million foreign residents resided in Germany on May 15, which was nearly one million less than previously anticipated.
The discrepancies were attributed to the impact on reporting requirements for foreigners. For example, some foreigners may have returned to their home countries before they could register. On the flip side, asylum seekers who were within a municipality on the census date may not have been formally registered yet.
