Justice - Project for children of prisoners to be expanded
Around a year after it was founded, the state specialist office "Network for children of prisoners" still sees a great need for information, advice and support services. Project manager Astrid Dietmann-Quurck told the German Press Agency that there is a great deal of interest in the topic among youth welfare workers. "We are knocking down open doors there."
The aim of the project is to better network youth welfare offices, advice centers and other social actors with the justice system in order to better address the needs of children of imprisoned parents and offer them appropriate help. Visits are also organized in the prisons so that employees from youth welfare offices can gain an impression of the situation on site. The project is initially focusing on Butzbach, Frankfurt III and Kassel I prisons, but talks are already underway with other prisons, said Dietmann-Quurck. There are probably several thousand children and young people affected throughout Hesse, but exact figures are not available.
The state specialist center is a project of the Giessen-based association Aktion Perspektive für junge Menschen, and the Hessian Ministries of Social Affairs and Justice are also involved. Similar projects also exist in other federal states. "It is always an enormous burden for a family when a member has to go to prison," explained Minister of Justice Roman Poseck (CDU). "Children in particular often suffer psychologically and physically from this difficult situation." It is important to consider the rights of affected children in everyday prison life and to maintain stabilizing family contacts as far as possible. According to the Minister, the network "provides further important impetus for a humane prison system".
