Project against right-wing extremism in schools to be continued
The Brandenburg Ministry of Education wants to continue the "Strong teachers - strong pupils" project against extremism on a permanent basis. From next year, a coordination office will be set up at the State Institute for Schools and Media to train teachers in dealing with right-wing extremist, anti-Semitic and racist beliefs, the ministry announced on Monday.
From 2020 until the end of this year, six upper secondary schools in Brandenburg took part in the project. The training courses were funded by the ministry, the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Robert Bosch Foundation with around 380,000 euros. The work at the schools was carried out by school advisors from the Regional Offices for Education, Integration and Democracy.
In future, the program is to be extended to all types of schools. "It will further promote the pedagogical skills of our teachers in dealing with group-focused misanthropy," said Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD). Schools must continue to address the issues of anti-Semitism, racism and political and religious extremism. "Political education and democracy education in schools are indispensable for this," emphasized the minister.
The "Strong teachers - strong pupils" project against extremism will now be implemented in all types of schools, aiming to enhance teachers' skills in addressing group-focused misanthropy related to extremism. Schools have a crucial role in tackling issues such as anti-Semitism, racism, and political and religious extremism, making political and democracy education necessary.
