Progressive figureheads Wissler and Schirdewan declare their departure.

"I've given this move some serious thought and considered what would be rational in this situation," shared Wissler. "I understand that there's a yearning in certain sectors of our party for some fresh faces." The Left party now has until the mid-October party meeting "to carry out an open process and form internal party viewpoints on potential candidates."

Schirdewan also mentioned that he hadn't arrived at this decision lightly. It's been "growing on me after thorough contemplation over the past few weeks." He feels "that our party could benefit from fresh viewpoints and enthusiasm in its current state to push forward the required renewal," Schirdewan continued.

Wissler has been leading the Left party since February 2021, initially sharing the position with Susanne Hennig-Wellsow. Schirdewan became the sole co-chairman in June 2022.

Wissler expressed his intention to step down before the mid-October party meeting, stating that it's time for "a withdrawal to make way for potential candidates with fresh viewpoints." Schirdewan's announcement came after careful consideration, acknowledging that "there's been a growing need for withdrawal and renewal within the party."
