- Progression of Blueprints for Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is Advancing
Developments in the Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld scheme
Moves in establishing Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld, situated next to Volkspark Altona, have gained traction further. Danish company Cobe Copenhagen has emerged victorious from the ongoing competitive dialogue process, which commenced in October 2023, for overseeing the urban design and property distribution strategy of the Science City area "Quarters by the Park."
Their design serves as the foundation for the functional planning, anticipated for completion by 2026, and for incorporating into the construction blueprints. The initial construction phase is expected to commence in the 2027-2028 timeframe.
Blending research, education, and commerce
Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld seeks to merge top-tier research, university education, and innovative enterprises. In accordance with the 2019 plan presented by the Senate, the 125-hectare space surrounding the existing fundamental research campus, anchored by German Electron Synchrotron (DESY), University of Hamburg, and the Max Planck Society, is to be developed up to 2040.
In Senator for Urban Development Karen Pein's (SPD) words, this project entails: "125 hectares, 3,800 new housing units, 2,000 researchers, 5,500 students, and job opportunities in the thousands."
Proposed S-Bahn
The "Quarters by the Park" region, presently in the competitive dialogue planning stages, accounts for an area of approximately 55 hectares adjacent to Volkspark Altona. It encompasses the race track grounds, adjacent allotment gardens, ongoing A7 highway cover construction, and extending to Holstenkamp.
Besides the 3,800 residential units, the plan includes recreational and sports facilities, social amenities, schools, and a university campus. Additionally, an underground S-Bahn line with a central station within the area is set for construction.
The construction blueprints will largely depend on the design provided by Cobe Copenhagen, who won the competitive dialogue process for urban design and property distribution strategy of the Science City area. The initial construction phase of Hamburg Science City Bahrenfeld is expected to start in the 2027-2028 timeframe.
The planned S-Bahn line, an integral part of the development, will include a central station within the "Quarters by the Park" area, providing easy commuting options for the anticipated 2,000 researchers and 5,500 students.
