Process against US-Journalist Gershkovich in Russia continued

In Russia, the trial against US journalist Evan Gershkovich was continued on Thursday. The second hearing in the case took place behind closed doors, as confirmed by a court spokesperson in Yekaterinburg. The spokesperson made no further comments. Journalists were denied access to the courtroom.

Process against US-Journalist Gershkovich in Russia continued

A 32-year-old Gershkovich is charged with espionage. If convicted, the journalist of the "Wall Street Journal" faces up to 20 years in a penal colony. The trial began on June 26. At the first hearing, the defendant was seen smiling and bald-headed in a glass cage for prisoners.

At the second hearing, which was moved forward on defense request from August 13 to July 18, the public was excluded from the start.

Gershkovich is the first Western journalist who has been arrested in Russia since the end of the Cold War on espionage charges. He has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest in March 2023.

The reporter was at the time of his arrest on a research trip in the city of Yekaterinburg, located east of the Ural Mountains, where his trial is now taking place. The 32-year-old denies the accusations, as does the US government and his employer.
