Stuttgart - Proceedings discontinued after apartment fire with two fatalities

An apartment fire with two fatalities in Stuttgart at the end of February initially puzzled the police, who later brought charges against the roommate of the two victims. However, the then 45-year-old Italian will not go on trial. The case was dropped because the man had died in the meantime, a spokesperson for the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office said on Thursday on request.

The man had been accused of killing his roommates after an argument. He was also suspected of setting the apartment on fire before leaving the house armed with two knives.

The fire department discovered the clouds of smoke in the Feuerbach district by chance on their way back from another operation. The man armed with two knives had stood in front of the entrance and initially blocked the way into the house. The fire department finally discovered the seriously injured men, a 54-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, in the rubble of the apartment. Both later succumbed to their stab wounds.
