Town of Sonneberg - Probe against an AfD city councilor: alleged use of NS slogans

A Sonneberg local councilor belonging to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is under police investigation for allegedly shouting Nazi slogans. According to reports, two complaints have been filed against the AfD politician, as confirmed by a police spokesperson last Friday. Several media outlets had previously written about this.

The incidents are alleged to have occurred in a bar and another location during the spring and December of 2022. The police are conducting their investigations due to the use of symbols linked to unconstitutional organizations, the spokesperson added.

The Thuringian AfD was informed about the accusations, said press spokesman Torben Braga. The party member was requested to provide a statement, which they denied. Consequently, the politician was advised to take legal action, Braga continued.

The AfD party in Thuringia has been identified as a reliably right-wing extremist by the state constitution protection since March 2021. Last year, Sonneberg made news when Robert Sesselmann became the first AfD district administrator in the country. In the recent municipal elections, the AfD emerged as the strongest force in Sonneberg.
