Legal Verdict: A Court's Decision or Judgment - Prisoners Caught on Camera Drinking in Jail: Authorities Looking into Matter
Inmates at the Justice Detention Center's open facility in Meppen captured themselves drinking alcohol on video. On Thursday, the Justice Ministry in Hanover acknowledged that this footage was taken from a portion of the detention center. The authorities are presently conducting an investigation into this matter, and they will take measures to prevent future occurrences.
The ministry had been aware of this situation since Wednesday. The spokesperson revealed that three of the prisoners in the video had already been released, the last one on March 28, 2024, so the video must have been filmed prior to that date.
The consumption of both alcohol and drugs is forbidden in both closed and open detention facilities, officials noted. It is currently being investigated how alcohol entered the open detention section and how its use went undetected.
Detention staff are required to report any significant occurrences or observations that may affect the safety and order of the institution. The Justice Detention Center in Meppen claimed that no security issues had been reported in the sector where this incident occurred.
Members of the CDU in the state parliament criticized Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann in this context. Calderone, the party's legal policy spokesperson, stated that the Justice Minister had apparently lost control of the situation at the open detention facility in JVA Meppen. He mentioned that in May, a convicted sex offender had managed to escape during an outing in Lee and was apprehended the following day in the Netherlands. According to him, further relaxation of the open detention, as announced by the Minister, is unacceptable. The Minister must provide an explanation to the Justice Committee regarding how she intends to tackle the obviously unacceptable and scandalous conditions at JVA Meppen.
