Prison sentences mainly for theft and embezzlement
Theft and embezzlement are the most common reasons for a prison sentence in Thuringia. As of March 31, there were 194 convicted criminals behind bars, according to the State Statistical Office on Wednesday. There were 170 offenders serving sentences for crimes against physical integrity - mainly assault. 39 people were serving a prison sentence for murder. A total of 1072 offenders were imprisoned in Thuringia's prisons on the reporting date, 4.1 percent fewer than a year earlier. 120 prison inmates were under the age of 25. As in the previous year, the proportion of foreigners among prisoners was 15.9 percent.
The penal system in Thuringia predominantly deals with imprisoning individuals convicted of theft and embezzlement. A significant portion of the prison population is also serving time for assault, with 170 offenders as of March 31.
