Process - Prison sentence after shooting in Frankfurt city center

Two 36 and 44-year-old men have each been sentenced to two years and ten months in prison after shots were fired in Frankfurt city center. In its verdict on Wednesday, the jury chamber of the Frankfurt Regional Court ruled on attempted extortion and weapons violations. The manslaughter attempt originally charged had to be dropped due to a lack of intent to kill. In May 2019, the men allegedly wanted to use armed force to collect outstanding debts.

The crime took place on the terrace of a snack bar near the Zeil shopping street. The 36-year-old fired eight shots from a pistol in quick succession to emphasize their demand for repayment of a usurious loan of 25,000 euros. He aimed at the ground and in the air. The borrower was nevertheless hit in the foot by a ricochet.

In a first trial, the defendants were sentenced to three years and four months and two years and ten months respectively. The Federal Supreme Court later overturned the verdict on formal grounds. According to the second verdict, both defendants' contributions to the crime were roughly equal, so that the same sentence was justifiable, according to the court. The verdict is not yet final - the defense had requested suspended sentences.
